Separate the cemetery bill from the funeral-home bill

A burial total can combine funeral-home services, cemetery space, interment, an outer burial container, a casket, and a marker. Austin publishes unusually useful municipal cemetery pricing, so Lantern keeps those charges separate instead of presenting one misleading total.

Burial space

The City currently says burial spaces are available for purchase at Austin Memorial Park and Evergreen Cemetery. Its published fee schedule lists a full-burial space at $3,600, plus a 20% cemetery maintenance surcharge and $50 deed-recording fee.

Interment and timing

The current schedule separately lists $1,825 added on recognized holidays and $590 for less than 12 working hours' notice, along with setup charges.

Outer burial container

City rules require a permanent container such as a concrete liner or burial vault for remains over 36 inches. The City schedule lists a liner charge separately. Texas otherwise leaves outer-container requirements to the individual cemetery's rules.

Funeral-home charges

Professional services, transfer, preparation or refrigeration, ceremony staffing, vehicles, casket and other merchandise can be separate from cemetery charges. Lantern is not publishing an Austin funeral-home burial range until current provider-controlled GPL coverage is broader.

Ask for two written estimates

Funeral home: services, transfer, preparation, ceremony or graveside staff, vehicles, casket and merchandise.

Cemetery: space, interment/opening and closing, maintenance or administrative fees, outer container, marker requirements, installation, and timing surcharges.

Research method

Austin burial research separates funeral-home charges, cemetery space, interment/opening-and-closing, outer burial container, and other merchandise. Current municipal or provider-controlled sources are preferred. Older provider GPLs and third-party survey prices are not used as current canonical funeral-home price evidence.

The Texas Department of Banking says cemetery prices are not regulated by the Department and an outer burial container is required when the selected cemetery's rules require one.
